Self Storage Adelaide — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our storage units, container modifications, and loading services — answered.

Pricing

How much does a storage unit cost in Adelaide?
Our 20ft units start at $70/week ($303.33/month) and our 40ft units start at $120/week ($520/month). No joining fees, no hidden charges. See our full pricing page →
What is the price of a 20ft storage unit per week?
A 20ft storage unit is $70 per week, or $303.33 per month. The unit measures 6m × 2.4m — approximately 15 square metres of floor space.
What is the price of a 40ft storage unit per week?
A 40ft storage unit is $120 per week, or $520 per month. The unit measures 12m × 2.4m — approximately 30 square metres of floor space.
How is the monthly price calculated?
Monthly prices are the weekly rate × 52 ÷ 12. The 20ft unit comes to $303.33/month and the 40ft unit $520/month. Most customers prefer weekly or fortnightly payment anyway for simplicity.
Are there any joining fees or hidden charges?
No. There are no joining fees, administration fees, or exit fees. The price you see is the price you pay — nothing added on invoice.
Is there a minimum rental period?
Yes — there is a 3-month minimum term. After that, your rental automatically rolls over monthly. You only need to give 30 days' written notice to vacate. We offer weekly or fortnightly payment options.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept direct debit via GoCardless. Payments are set up as weekly or fortnightly — whichever suits your budget and cash flow.
Do you offer discounts for long-term storage?
Contact us to discuss your long-term storage needs. We're a locally owned business and happy to have a conversation about arrangements that work for both parties.
Is self storage worth it?
For most people, yes. Self storage in Adelaide gives you flexible, secure space without committing to a larger home or commercial lease. At $70/week for a 20ft unit, it's often cheaper than a garage rental and far more accessible than off-site warehousing. It's particularly cost-effective during moves, renovations, business scale-ups, or when downsizing.
How much does short-term storage cost in Adelaide?
At SK Storage Solutions, short-term storage starts at $70/week for a 20ft unit. There's a 3-month minimum term, after which you can leave with 30 days' notice — making it practical for renovations, between-lease periods, or temporary overflow storage.
Is renting a shipping container cheaper than a storage unit?
Our storage units are full-size shipping containers — 20ft and 40ft steel units on our secure Para Hills West property. You get the space and durability of a shipping container with 24/7 drive-up access, without the cost of purchasing, transporting, or placing one yourself.

Access & Security

Can I access my storage unit at any time, day or night?
Yes — 24/7 access, 365 days a year. There are no lock-out hours. You can come and go as you please, at any time that suits you.
How do I lock my unit — do you supply a padlock?
You bring your own padlock. Any standard padlock works on our units. This means only you hold the key — we cannot access your unit, and nor can anyone else without your padlock key.
Is the facility monitored by CCTV or security cameras?
Contact us for current details about our security arrangements at the Para Hills West facility. We take the security of your goods seriously.
What happens if I lose my key or lock?
Since you supply your own padlock, if you lose your key you'll need a locksmith or bolt cutters to remove it — just as you would at home. We recommend keeping a spare key in a safe place.
Can I authorise other people to access my unit?
Yes. Simply give your padlock key to anyone you trust. Let us know in advance who else may be accessing your unit so we can ensure smooth entry.
Is the facility fenced and gated?
Contact us for the latest details about the facility's perimeter security at Para Hills West.
Do I need contents insurance for my stored goods?
SK Storage Solutions does not provide insurance cover for stored goods. We strongly recommend taking out contents insurance for anything of value. Many home and contents policies can be extended to cover off-site storage.
Are the storage units climate controlled?
Our units are not air-conditioned or temperature controlled — they are weatherproof steel containers that keep your goods dry and protected from the elements. For most household goods, furniture, tools, and business stock this is more than adequate. If you're storing temperature-sensitive items like wine or fine art, contact us to discuss your needs.
Can I run electricity to my storage unit?
Standard storage rentals do not include power. However, if you're interested in a modified unit with electrical provisions — such as a site office or workshop — we offer container modifications that include electrical fit-out points. Learn more about modifications →

What Can I Store?

What can I store in a self storage unit?
Almost anything that isn't prohibited. Common items include: household furniture, clothing, appliances, business stock, tools and trade equipment, seasonal items, sporting gear, documents, electronics, and more.
What items are prohibited in a storage unit?
You cannot store dangerous goods, flammable liquids, explosives, gas cylinders, illegal items, perishable food, live animals, or any hazardous materials. The full list is in your rental agreement.
Can I store a car, motorbike, or jet ski?
Yes. Our drive-up units have direct drive-up access. A 20ft unit can fit a motorbike, ATV, or small watercraft. A 40ft unit can accommodate larger vehicles. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
Can I store business stock or palletised goods?
Yes. Both unit sizes are suitable for business stock, palletised goods, and trade equipment. Our forklift and manhandling services can assist with getting large quantities of stock in and out.
Can I store furniture in a storage unit long term?
Yes. Our weatherproof steel units keep furniture dry and protected. For long-term storage of upholstered items, use breathable covers to prevent dust buildup. Avoid plastic sheeting on fabric as it can trap moisture.
Is it safe to store electronics or appliances?
Yes. Our units are weatherproof. For sensitive electronics stored long-term, consider using silica gel packets inside boxes to control moisture. Make sure items are clean and dry before storing.
Can I store food or perishables?
No. Perishable food and anything that can rot, attract pests, or create a health hazard is strictly prohibited from our storage units.
Can I store documents or archival files?
Yes. Many businesses store document archives with us. Box everything clearly, keep boxes off the floor on pallets or shelving, and label all boxes on the side for easy retrieval.
Can I store a caravan or boat in a storage unit?
A 40ft high-cube unit (12m × 2.4m × 2.9m) can accommodate many trailer boats, jet skis, and smaller caravans. Contact us with your exact dimensions and we'll confirm whether it will fit. Drive-up access makes loading and retrieval straightforward.
How do I prevent mould in a storage unit?
Our weatherproof steel units minimise moisture entry, but Adelaide's humidity can still affect poorly prepared goods. To prevent mould: ensure everything is clean and dry before storing, use silica gel packets inside boxes and furniture drawers, avoid packing items in airtight plastic bags (use breathable covers), and keep goods off the floor on pallets or shelving to allow air circulation.
What is the best way to store a mattress in a storage unit?
Store a mattress standing upright on its side — lying flat with weight on top can cause permanent sagging. Use a breathable mattress bag (not airtight plastic) to keep it clean and dust-free. In a 20ft or 40ft unit you'll have enough room to lean it against the wall without it taking up floor space.
Can I sleep or live in a storage unit?
No. Sleeping or residing in a storage unit is not permitted under your rental agreement. Storage units are for goods only. If you're looking for a liveable container dwelling, we do offer tiny home container conversions — a purpose-built alternative.
How do I store clothes long term in a storage unit?
Wash and dry all clothing thoroughly before storing — storing damp or dirty clothes causes mildew and staining. Use vacuum storage bags to save space, or breathable wardrobe boxes for delicate items. Add a cedar block or silica packet to deter moisture and pests. Avoid leaving clothes loose in cardboard boxes directly on the floor.

Moving & Packing

How do I pack a storage unit efficiently?
Stack heavier boxes at the bottom, lighter on top. Keep items you'll need access to near the front. Use vertical space — stack boxes on furniture. Label every box on the side (not the top) so you can read labels without unstacking. Leave a walking aisle if you have a large unit.
What size unit do I need for a 2-bedroom house?
A 20ft unit (~15 sqm) is generally suitable for the contents of a 1–2 bedroom home. If you have a lot of large furniture or a garage full of gear, consider a 40ft unit for more breathing room.
What size unit do I need for a 3–4 bedroom house?
A 40ft unit (~30 sqm) is recommended for a 3–4 bedroom home. It provides enough space for all furniture, appliances, boxes, and the extra items that accumulate in a family home.
Do you provide moving boxes or packing supplies?
Contact us to ask about packing supply availability. We're happy to point you in the right direction for boxes, tape, and packing materials.
Can I drive a truck or trailer directly to the unit door?
Yes. All our units are directly accessible with direct drive-up access. You can back a trailer or truck right up to your unit door — no ramps, no lifts, no narrow corridors.
Can I access the unit while I am moving house and things are in transit?
Yes. Your 24/7 access begins from day one of your rental. You can make as many trips as you need, at any hour, without restriction.
Should I use shelving in my storage unit?
Yes — shelving is one of the best ways to maximise a storage unit. It gets boxes off the floor (protecting them from moisture), creates clear organisation zones, and lets you use the full height of the unit. Freestanding metal shelving units work well in both 20ft and 40ft containers. Our 40ft high-cube units have a 2.9m internal height, giving you excellent vertical storage capacity.
How do I store large furniture items in a storage unit?
Disassemble what you can — bed frames, dining tables, shelving — to free up floor space and reduce the risk of damage. Wrap upholstered pieces in breathable furniture covers. Stand sofas on their end if possible. Place heavy items like white goods on the floor and stack lighter boxes on top of dressers and table surfaces. Leave a small aisle in a larger unit so you can reach items at the back.

Depending on your location and intended use, planning approval may be required. We recommend checking with your local council before proceeding. We're happy to discuss your situation and advise from our experience.
Are shipping container homes legal in South Australia?
Container homes can be legal in South Australia, but they are subject to council planning approval and must comply with the relevant building codes for habitable structures. Requirements vary by council and zone. We recommend engaging a building certifier and checking with your local council before proceeding. We can advise on what modifications are involved; the planning process is ultimately the owner's responsibility.

Container tiny home costs in Australia vary widely depending on the level of fit-out — from a basic shell conversion to a fully fitted dwelling with insulation, plumbing, electrical, and cladding. Contact us for a quote based on your specific requirements. We'll provide a detailed specification and price before any work begins.

What is break-bulk freight?
